Back-to-School Wellness Essentials: What's in My Kids' School Bags Every Year
Back-to-school season always feels like someone hit the fast-forward button.
Whether your family homeschools, attends private school, or heads off to public school each morning, this time of year brings a whole new rhythm.
Schedules fill up.
Lunches get packed.
Sports begin.
Dance starts.
Choir rehearsals return.
And somehow, we're expected to remember who needs what on which day. 😅
Even though I homeschooled all of my children, they were involved in plenty of activities outside the home.
Sports.
Dance.
Choir.
Youth group.
You name it.
If one of my kids was interested in it, we probably gave it a try!
One thing never changed, though.
I always wanted to send them out prepared—not just academically, but physically, emotionally, and spiritually too.

My Number One Back-to-School Essential

At the very top of my list isn't a supplement.
Or an essential oil.
Or even healthy snacks.
It's prayer.
Before my children walk out the door, I want them covered in prayer.
I know there are many things I can't control once they leave the house.
But I also know the One who goes with them.
That brings this mama more peace than anything else ever could.

My Goal: Equip, Don't Hover

As moms, we can't always be there to solve every problem.
But we can give our children tools they can use when they need them.
Whether that's healthy habits, encouraging words, or simple wellness products that fit their needs, I want my kids to feel prepared wherever they go.
Here are a few things that have earned a permanent place in our back-to-school routine.

What's in Our School Bags

Thieves® Waterless Hand Sanitizer

School is full of shared desks, playground equipment, lunch tables, and plenty of opportunities to pick up germs.
That's why I always keep hand sanitizer in backpacks.
I love having one that's easy to use before lunch, after recess, or anytime soap and water aren't available.
It's become one of those simple habits that helps encourage good hand hygiene throughout the day.

Peace & Calming® Roll-On

Some children feel big emotions.
New classrooms.
Tests.
Presentations.
Making new friends.
Those moments can feel overwhelming.
One thing my kids have always appreciated is having a familiar calming ritual.
When they're feeling anxious or overstimulated, they roll Peace & Calming® onto their wrists, take a few slow, deep breaths, and pause for a moment.
Sometimes that little reset is all they need.

Breathe Again™ Roll-On

One of my daughters actually introduced me to this one.
She told me she liked reaching for it whenever she felt nervous or overwhelmed.
She enjoyed taking a few deep breaths while using the refreshing aroma, and it became part of her personal calming routine.
I hadn't even thought about using it that way until she shared it with me.
Now it always has a place in her bag.

Thieves® Roll-On

When life gets busy, I appreciate having wellness products that are easy to carry.
The Thieves® Roll-On is one of those items I like having available during long school days, travel, or packed activity schedules.
It's a simple addition that fits easily into a backpack or purse.

NingXia Red®

Busy kids need good nutrition.
While healthy meals are always my priority, I also like having convenient options that help round out their daily nutrition.
NingXia Red® provides antioxidants from wolfberries and other fruits, making it an easy addition to our family's wellness routine.

Every Child Is Different

One thing I've learned after raising multiple children is this:
There is no one-size-fits-all backpack.
Every child has different personalities.
Different schedules.
Different needs.
Different strengths.
Some need extra snacks.
Some need extra tissues.
Some need a calming reminder tucked into their lunchbox.
The goal isn't to pack the "perfect" backpack.
The goal is to thoughtfully prepare each child for the day ahead.

Healthy Back-to-School Habits Matter Most

Products are helpful.
But the everyday habits matter even more.
Before school starts, we try to prioritize:
  • Prayer together
  • Healthy breakfasts
  • Plenty of water
  • Good hand hygiene
  • Consistent bedtime routines
  • Encouraging conversations
  • Time outdoors after school
Those are the things that truly become the foundation of a healthy school year.

The Bottom Line

Back-to-school season isn't just about buying school supplies.
It's about preparing our children for whatever the year brings.
For our family, that starts with prayer.
Then healthy habits.
Then a backpack filled with a few practical tools that help make the day a little easier.
Every family will look different.
And that's okay.
The most important thing isn't what's in the backpack.
It's the love, encouragement, and confidence your child carries with them when they walk out the door.

What's One Thing That's Always in Your Child's Backpack?

Is it snacks?
A water bottle?
A favorite pen?
An encouraging note?
I'd love to hear the one item your family never leaves home without.

WELL, HELLO!

Hi Friend!

I’m Terri Bonin—wife to my favorite dentist (who keeps me smiling in more ways than one!) and mama to eleven incredible kiddos… yep, on purpose! Now, they’re growing up, getting married, and multiplying, so our family is basically the size of a small town!

I’ve homeschooled for over 25 years (with several more to go until our youngest, who’s eleven, graduates). I was crunchy before it was cool and slathering essential oils on my kids before they were a thing. Around here, I share mom hacks, marriage wisdom, wellness tips, and real-life glimpses into our beautifully chaotic, laughter-filled home.

I hope you find this space happy, helpful, and relatable! And if you love good conversations, come hang out with me on my podcast, "Terri Bonin At Home", where we chat about building a strong family culture, natural remedies, and navigating the wonderful (and sometimes wild) world of marriage and motherhood.

Let’s do life together—one drop, one laugh, and one lesson at a time!
