My Hospital Go-Bag Essentials (Learned the Hard Way 🙃)

My Real-Life Mama-Tested Protocol for Peace, Calm, and Comfort in the Hardest Places

I never set out to be an expert in hospital preparedness.
I didn’t want that badge.
But sometimes life hands you the unexpected—and suddenly you’re learning the ropes under fluorescent lights, in waiting rooms, and in places that feel far from home.
This year, our family went through what felt like an emotional earthquake.
My daughter had an emergency birth. Then a brain tumor. Then surgery.
And then, complications after surgery.
We lived inside a hospital room for weeks—surviving on vending machine snacks, whispering prayers over her sleeping body, and learning medical terms we never wanted to know.
If you’ve ever walked this road—or even stood on the edge of it—I see you.
And I want to pass along the little things that helped me breathe a little easier in the chaos.
Because while not everything is in our control, some things are.
And believe it or not… what I packed in my hospital bag became little lifelines. ✨

1. Pack the Raindrop Kit (and Always Keep a Backup)

The Raindrop oils were my go-to heroes—day after day.
My daughter had a lumbar drain in her spine and had to lie still for hours. Her shoulders started to ache something fierce. One day, through tired eyes, she whispered, “Mom, can you do the oils?”
She meant the Raindrop oils—our family’s most-loved combo.
I gently rubbed her shoulders, and as the oils soaked in, I could see her body unclench. Her face softened.
These oils do so much more than smell good:
  • Ease tension in muscles carrying stress
  • Support the immune system (a must when surrounded by germs)
  • Bring peace when the air feels heavy
💡 Mama Tip: I now keep multiple Raindrop kits—one in my emergency stash, one in the go-bag, and one I never touch unless absolutely necessary. You don’t want to be caught without it.

2. Diffuse Peace (Even in a Place That Feels Anything But)

Let’s be real: hospital rooms do not feel cozy.
Machines beep, people come and go, and that sharp, sterile smell hangs in the air.
But the moment I pulled out my little Wanderful diffuser and added a few drops of Peace & Calming and Lavender, it was like the whole room exhaled.
Even the nurses noticed.
They’d pause and say, “Mmm… it smells so relaxing in here.”
That smell became our comfort blanket—for her, for me, and for every visitor who needed to breathe deep and slow down.
💡 Mama Tip: The Wanderful diffuser fits in a cup holder, runs for 18 hours on one charge, and now goes everywhere with me—because peace is portable.

3. Spray the Germs Away (and Reclaim a Sense of Control)

If you’ve ever stayed in a hospital, you know “clean” looks very different depending on the hour and the shift. 😅
My daughter, Alexis, actually saw one of the maids use the same rag on the toilet and the counter. (Yes, really. Ughhhh.)
So I became the Thieves Spray Queen.
Every doorknob, every bed rail, every surface I could legally (and maybe questionably) spray got a dose of Thieves.
You can:
  • Mix your own with Thieves Household Cleaner, water, and a splash of alcohol
  • Or just grab the ready-made spray or sanitizer and call it done
It was my small way of protecting my daughter and taking action when I couldn’t fix what was broken.

What I’ve Learned on This Journey

These oils didn’t “fix” the medical crisis.
But they gave me something priceless:
  • A moment of peace when I felt powerless
  • A tool I could use when everything else was out of my hands
  • A way to comfort my daughter in the middle of fear and pain
We’re on the other side now.
And I pray you never have to pack a hospital bag.
But if you do—I hope these little tools bring you what they brought me:
✨ A sense of calm
✨ A breath of peace
✨ A glimmer of comfort in the storm
You are not alone, mama.
With love and hope,
Terri 💛

WELL, HELLO!

Hi Friend!

I’m Terri Bonin—wife to my favorite dentist (who keeps me smiling in more ways than one!) and mama to eleven incredible kiddos… yep, on purpose! Now, they’re growing up, getting married, and multiplying, so our family is basically the size of a small town!

I’ve homeschooled for over 25 years (with several more to go until our youngest, who’s eleven, graduates). I was crunchy before it was cool and slathering essential oils on my kids before they were a thing. Around here, I share mom hacks, marriage wisdom, wellness tips, and real-life glimpses into our beautifully chaotic, laughter-filled home.

I hope you find this space happy, helpful, and relatable! And if you love good conversations, come hang out with me on my podcast, "Terri Bonin At Home", where we chat about building a strong family culture, natural remedies, and navigating the wonderful (and sometimes wild) world of marriage and motherhood.

Let’s do life together—one drop, one laugh, and one lesson at a time!
