Self Care

Self Care
Well, here we are. The Holidays are behind us, kids are back in school, jobs are in full swing, and hopefully we have fallen back into a new normal routine. Hopefully, two weeks into our new year, you are still just as excited about committing to a year of health and wellness! If, however, you are like the rest of us mere mortals and getting back into routine sent healthy habits to the back burner, NO WORRIES! I have been where you are, and am here for YOU.

A habit of health requires small, incremental changes be made part of your life. Today, I want to fortify you with more practical ways to institute a wellness mindset in your home. Let’s make changes TOGETHER, you are WORTH IT!

Self-Care

A morning routine might be the most important thing you do in a day. A solid morning routine will set you up for success throughout the rest of your day. It will make you feel GREAT and ready to tackle the world. Spend a half an hour a day taking care of yourself and you will optimize your productivity all day long.

I have come up with ten activities for you to accomplish in the morning. They will set you up for success, which is why you should incorporate these practice into your daily routine.

  1. Make your bed
  2. Drink a glass of water right when you wake up
  3. Take a Lemon Juice and a Young Living NingXia Red Shot
  4. Wash your face and brush your teeth
  5. Take your Vitamins
  6. Eat a balanced breakfast
  7. Exercise or take a little time to move, stretch, foam roll, etc.
  8. Pamper yourself (use a skin brush, take a bath, or exfoliate with a coffee skin scrub)
  9. Take three deep breaths
  10. Find gratitude in your life/journal

Coffee Skin Scrub

A great addition to your morning routine is a shower with a natural, exfoliating scrub. This recipe is clean and invigorating.
INGREDIENTS
  • 8 oz. glass jar with lid
  • 10 drops Grapefruit essential oil
  • 5 drops Cypress essential oil
  • 1 cup unbrewed ground coffee
  • ½ cup olive oil or other oil of your choosing.
DIRECTIONS
  • Combine all ingredients.
  • Mix together well.
  • Store in a cool dark place.
Apply scrub all over in the shower a few times a week to desired areas such as thighs, belly, and arms, and rinse off. You will not believe! Worried about it going down the drain? Apply a screen over your drain to catch the coffee grounds.

Citrus Blueberry Muffins

Citrus Blueberry Muffins
Ok, but who doesn’t love a way to make a fun, munchie treat WITHOUT loading it down with yucky ingredients? I think we so often fail to realize that the products marketed to us as “safe” are some of the most detrimental items we can put into our bodies. Foods are fabricated and drenched in chemicals to elongate their shelf life. This makes shopping today seriously SO difficult. You have to read ALL the ingredients on an item before you place it in your cart, just so that you don’t end up with an item that may have petroleum or formaldehyde in it (scared face emoji). Y’all, this was not how it was for my parents generation or the generation before them. They didn’t have to worry about whether or not milk was actually milk. Now days, we have to be on the look out. Anyways, I didn’t hop on here to scare you all, I really just wanted to share that there ARE alternatives, and that those alternatives can be SO SO yummy. :D

A little note on this recipe, it can totally be altered to be exactly what you want. I used all organic ingredients to try and keep it as clean as possible. Also, the apple sauce and banana are optional. I’ve found that you don’t want to throw out both in one batch. They add a level of moisture that make for some killer muffins. So go with either the apple sauce or the banana, or both.

Citrus Blueberry Muffins Recipe

INGREDIENTS
1 ripe banana
1 egg
1/3 cup coconut oil
1/2 applesauce
1 cup fresh organic blueberries
3/4 cup organic brown sugar
2 drops lemon vitality essential oil
6 drops tangerine vitality essential oil
1 cup YL Einkorn Flour
1 cup organic oatmeal
1/2 tsp baking soda
2 tsp baking powder
1 1/4 tsp salt
***optional: 1 scoop YL Vanilla Spice Pure Protein Complete

DIRECTIONS
  1. Preheat oven to 350 * F
  2. Combine banana, egg, coconut oil, applesauce, and brown sugar in a bowl.
  3. In a separate bowl mix together flour, oatmeal, baking soda, baking powder, salt and *protein powder*
  4. Gently stir flour mixture into wet mixture and add blueberries, drops of lemon and tangerine essential oils
  5. Fill muffin liners with mixtures
  6. Bake 15-20 minutes on 350*. Makes 12 muffins

Let cool and ENJOY this tangy, sweet goodness! <3

Rapunzel Only Wishes

Rapunzel Only Wishes
Hair Routine

I don’t know about you ladies out there, but I have always been one to want LONGER, THICKER, FULLER hair. I’ve tried so many products on the market and I was always discouraged by how long it would take my hair to grow. It was SO common for my hair to just fall out in massive chunks every time I took a shower, and of course that never really helped the whole “hair growth” process. I always thought losing my hair was a normal thing. “Maybe it’s just because I’m getting older, maybe I need to add certain vitamins to my diet, maybe I need to….” You fill in the blank.

Y’all! You know that I’m probably the most extra, most crunchy mama there is. It’s not like I was eating only chips and salsa. Nutrition is SO important when it comes to healthy, glowing hair, skin, and nails. But it’s not just what goes IN on bodies that matters, but what goes ON! Sometimes we don’t realize just how much what we put on our body can be destructive. Over the years, we’ve been on a journey to decrease the toxic load in our home and increase the amount of clean items we put inside and on our bodies. Because of this, I’ve learned so much about proper hair care!

Now, this post isn’t about working your health from the inside out—meaning, fixing what’s going on inside before looking at what’s on the outside—because I definitely believe we should do that! If there’s something going on externally, odds are, there’s something going on internally and it’s just manifesting on the surface… Poetic. But I digress.

Here we’re talking specifically about a HAIR CARE routine. Hair loss is an epidemic in women, because what women assume as normal (hair ALWAYS falling out), is actually NOT. Because of the chemicals found in everyday hair products, your hair is literally just being burned off the top of your head. Yikes!

The Young Living haircare line is by and large the BEST shampoo and conditioner you will ever use. After my first wash with them, my hair IMMEDIATELY stopped shedding massive chunks… That, plus a little froo-froo magic and VOULA, my hair looks and feels better than ever. Even after having so many babies and being my age! Anyways, my routine!

Routine
+ Lather, rinse, and repeat with the Young Living Lavender Mint Shampoo.
+ Lather Young Living’s Lavender Mint Conditioner and let sit for a minute (I guesstimate this time). If you have curlier hair, brush through your hair while the conditioner is setting so as to evenly distribute. RINSE.
+ While hair is still wet, sprits with a mixture of: 5 drops Cedarwood, 5 drops Lavender, and distilled water in an 8oz amber spray bottle.
+ Drop some Mirah Lustrous Hair Oil into hands and apply to the latter third of your damp hair. Then blow dry!
+ If styling, see our sassy hair spray recipe for a little extra OOMF.

There you have it! A quick guide to some long, lustrous locks that even Rapunzel would be jealous of!

Citrus - Minty Metabolism Tincture

Citrus - Minty Metabolism Tincture

Citrus - Minty Metabolism Tincture

Following is a cheat sheet to keeping your metabolism in tip top shape, so you can have the energy you need to chase kids, and do all those actives you enjoy! I’m not a super fan of “weight loss” drinks or diets, because health MUST be a lifestyle, it can NEVER come in a the form of a quick fix! So while I have a “weight loss tincture” recipe here for you, please understand that health is a lifestyle!

Here are my tips:

1) Get on a regular sleeping and waking routine! it’s ideal to get to bed by 10pm!
2) Don’t eat sugar on a daily basis! Sugar slows a metabolism.
2 )Eat for energy! Eat Whole Foods such as foods with one ingredient like: meat, vegetables, fruit, grain.
3) Avoid packaged processed foods and chemicals.
4) Add this metabolism supporting tincture to your routine! I chose the following oils to go in my tincture because the plant properties are amazing and support a healthy metabolism. For instance: black pepper supports healthy adrenal glands and slows the accumulation of fat. Lemon supports healthy digestion and a clean system. Peppermint tells the hypothalamus that your stomach is satisfied.  Cinnamon supports healthy blood sugar. MCT oil releases peptide and leptin that make your cells feel full.

  • You can buy the 15ml tincture lids here.. Tincture Bottles and lids (affiliate link)
  • 20 drops black pepper essential oil
  • 20 drops lemon essential oil
  • 20 drops cinnamon essential oil

What to do? What to do?

What to do? What to do?
Surprise!

You get a three month vacation at home with your kids with no option for indoor playgrounds, public pools or big parties! Now what? What a great opportunity to pull your kids in close and help them learn how to manage their time well.

Just like eating too much junk food makes a person feel gross, laying around doing nothing also provides that bottom of the barrel, awful feeling! So what can we do about it without spending money or leaving the house?

First determine that your home is going to be a happy place! Think of the different ways you can create beauty! Beauty comes in many forms but laughter trumps all! “See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity!,”  Ps 133:1

Following are a few ways to create beauty: tidy a room and add fresh picked flowers from the yard, create a savory or sweet dish to show your family you care, play uplifting music that energizes the mind and soul, have a rich conversation that involves eye to eye contact! Keep adding to the list and share with me your ideas!

As the mom you get to set the tone and the schedule, so here’s a flow you and your kids will enjoy. I prefer to have a flow schedule versus one that starts at a certain time. That way no matter what time we start we are not behind. Make sense? This is just a suggest. Change it to fit your family!

Flow Chart for Kids

GOOD MORNING!

      • Eat Breakfast/take vitamins
      • Read the Proverb of the day in the Bible with your mom and siblings (You will find the book of Proverbs in the center of the Bible. There are 31 chapters in the book. Each chapter has about 31 versus. Look at the date on the calendar and read the corresponding Proverb. Talk about your favorite verse with someone!)
      • Pray
      • Quick pick up or chores to praise/worship music
      • Draw/sketch (use an instructional book or YouTube video)
      • Make a snack/clean up your mess
      • handwriting/typing practice (alternate from day to day)
      • Run laps in the backyard/ jump on trampoline/dance
      • Practice math facts: print drill free drill sheets off internet, sing with Classical Conversations app/flashcards
      • Tidy something/fold laundry/straighten books/clean up toys/unload dishwasher/clean closet
      • Write a letter in your neatest handwriting
      • Story time! Have mom read aloud or listen to audible.com
      • Quiet reading time
      • Run laps/jump/dance
      • Practice piano/recorder/guitar/your instrument
      • Screen time/games
      • Strength training/sit-ups/pushups/lunges
      • Help mom make dinner/set the table/clear the table/
      • Free time
      • Bedtime routine

This is just a suggestion based on the way we flow in our home. You design your flow to fit your family ways! I hope this helps someone! Let me know if you use it. I’m praying for you mommas!

WELL, HELLO!

Hi Friend!

I’m Terri Bonin—wife to my favorite dentist (who keeps me smiling in more ways than one!) and mama to eleven incredible kiddos… yep, on purpose! Now, they’re growing up, getting married, and multiplying, so our family is basically the size of a small town!

I’ve homeschooled for over 25 years (with several more to go until our youngest, who’s eleven, graduates). I was crunchy before it was cool and slathering essential oils on my kids before they were a thing. Around here, I share mom hacks, marriage wisdom, wellness tips, and real-life glimpses into our beautifully chaotic, laughter-filled home.

I hope you find this space happy, helpful, and relatable! And if you love good conversations, come hang out with me on my podcast, "Terri Bonin At Home", where we chat about building a strong family culture, natural remedies, and navigating the wonderful (and sometimes wild) world of marriage and motherhood.

Let’s do life together—one drop, one laugh, and one lesson at a time!
